Dominic Smith is a Business Administration Apprentice at Revolver Music. Dominic shares his experience as part of the inaugural BRITs Apprenticeship programme.

What made you apply for this BRITs Apprentice role with Revolver Music?
“I applied for this BRIT’s apprenticeship at Revolver as I wanted to gain industry experience whilst gaining qualifications within business administration. I have always had a passion for learning about music and the industry surrounding it, so it seemed a no-brainer!”
Who else works in your team, and what are their roles?
“My team consists of my Line Manager Calum, Submissions and Digital Administrator Joshua and Digital Content Administrators William and Matt.”
What is the first thing you do when you enter the office every morning?
“The first thing I do is the tea and coffee rounds, it turns out I am proficient in making flat whites, cappuccinos, mochas, and espressos after previously working in a café! I would then say I look at the digital streaming statistics and my Emails.”
What’s the most exciting project/task you’ve worked on so far?
“So far, I have been a part of 3 licensing and digital distribution deals that I have had the lead and control of, of which, all have been successful throughout negotiations, uploads, and social media pushing.”
What’s the most challenging task you’ve undertaken in your role?
“The most challenging task I have been a part of yet is looking into the possibility of setting up a new distribution service that would be in-house. This would involve digital data exchange, the use of coding software and setting up our own servers. It isn’t something which will be viable for the business currently however further investigation by myself will be made over the following months.”
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned on your apprenticeship so far?
“Apart from clear and concise conversations with any party you may be dealing with, internal or external, it would be to never have more than 20 E-mails in your inbox. Read them, reply and organize them so they are easy to trace!”
What advice would you give someone hoping to take part in an apprenticeship?
“Go in with an open mind. You will do work you enjoy and other things that you may not like or will be out of your comfort zone. Ask for help if you need it and keep on doing the harder work, you’ll get there!”
What’re your next steps once you have completed your apprenticeship?
“I would really enjoy continuing at the company of my placement but I think you should also always be open to prospective jobs within the music industry and others, as all these experiences will widen your skillset.”
Describe your BRITs Apprenticeship experience in three words.
“Engaging. Inspiring. Enjoyable.”
